The women were named as the “Crowning Women of the World” by the National Organization for Women (NOW) at the organization’s annual awards ceremony on Sunday.
The three are among a group of Hollywood celebrities and businesswomen who have shared their personal stories of overcoming discrimination and overcoming their own struggles with gender identity and expression.
They are joined by an array of other notable women who have come forward to share personal stories and struggles with being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, questioning and questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity.
In the past year, many celebrities and other prominent people have come out as lesbian, bisexual or transgender, including the former head of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and actor Ellen DeGeneres.
“This is a great day for all of us to be able to celebrate the courage and dedication of the women of the LGBT community,” said NOW President Shannon Coulter in a statement on Sunday night.
“They are leaders in the fight for inclusion, acceptance and justice for all.
We are so proud to have their voices heard and hear their stories, and we hope that the legacy of these brave women will continue to inspire us and inspire others.”

In 2015, he married actor/director James Franco, who he had met through his theatre work.
Since then, they have two children together.
He told PEOPLE Magazine in 2016 that he was initially afraid to come out to his mother.
“I thought, ‘Why am I coming out?
Why am I going to tell her what I am?’
She’s always been really supportive,” he said at the time.
“And I’ve always been the kid who didn’t want to tell anybody.”
He said he had to go through a “fatalist” phase in which he feared he was “playing the victim” and was “the one who is getting hurt.”
“My mother was very supportive of me,” he told PEOPLE in 2017.
“She’s a wonderful mother.
She’s a great person.
She was very open to me.”
JADISSON JONHARDTS, RUSSETON JONNIES, JENNIFER GALLEN, JANET PALLADINO, and PETER KING were the first openly lesbian women to win an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture or Television Series.
In an interview with the New York Times in 2016, they said that the best part of being in the movie business is “being able to do something for others and being able to help people.”

In her speech at the ceremony, actress Jennifer Garner said that she felt a “huge, massive, weight off my shoulders” after the award was announced.
“For the first time in my life, I felt powerful.
I felt empowered,” she said.
“It feels so weird to talk about it because it was a really big moment in my career and it’s a moment that I was able to walk away from with some of my greatest memories, and I’m still going to carry that with me,” she added.
