Saudi Arabia on Tuesday arrested a woman for “blasphemous remarks” on social media about Islam and women, the state-run Saudi Press Agency reported.
According to the news agency, the incident took place on Monday, when a woman was arrested for “making blasphemous comments” about Islam on social networks.
The Saudi Press Service said the woman, identified as A.J., was charged with “blast against religion and public morals,” and sentenced to a year in prison.
“The woman was held at the royal court in the capital, Riyadh, after being summoned by the prosecutor’s office,” the news service said.
Saudi Arabia has been in a state of emergency since March to combat the spread of the coronavirus, which has killed hundreds of people.
